Heritage Pigs
Each year we raise 7-10 pigs to sell in the fall. We feed them our excess goat milk, as well as a balanced Purina pig ration (Nature's Match) and garden scraps. They are raised humanely in a pasture with plenty of sunlight, a shady shelter, and mud. They love to wallow in mud and root in the dirt!
Did you know that pork from pigs raised in natural sunlight can be a significant source of vitamin D3? Check out this 2017 study for details: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5685574/
Beginning in 2016, we have been raising Gloucestershire Old Spot (GOS) pigs. These heritage-breed pigs are more docile and easier to keep than the standard breeds, and the meat is especially tasty! (The GOS pigs pictured in the first photo, shown below, are getting their daily milk to drink.) They do have more fat than commercial pigs.
We raised 7 GOS pigs in 2024 and charged $4.95/lb. (based on hanging weight). They were processed on November 27, 2023, by Jacobsmuhlen's Meats in Cornelius, Oregon. In 2024 we will raise 9 pigs and are planning have them processed in December.
The pigs are slaughtered humanely on our farm and then the meat is processed at the shop to the buyer's specifications--cured hams and bacon, breakfast sausage, pork steaks and chops, roasts, ground pork and more! The meat is delicious! Buyers pay a nonrefundable $50 deposit to reserve a half or whole pig, then pay the balance to our farm once the pig is slaughtered. Don't forget to request leaf lard if you would like to render your own lard (it's very easy to do).
Processing costs are not included in the price of the pig and must be paid to the processor. Buyers place their orders with Jacobsmuhlen's Meats right after the pigs are slaughtered. Jacobsmuhlen's can be reached at 503-359-0479. Their 2024 processing costs, as I understand them are: $80/pig mobile processing plus $20/pig disposal fee, $.1.00/lb. cut and wrap, $.50/lb. breakfast or $2.00/lb. Italian sausage, $2.00/lb. curing bacon and hams. They also sell peppered bacon and link sausage. (Please confirm these costs when you place your order with them--we do not control the cost of processing.) Buyers will pick up their meat at their shop in mid-December when it is finished: 1415 NW Susbauer Road, Cornelius, OR 97113.
